The room lighting and screen brightness should be set at an individually comfortable level. Generally, a bright environment is activating and motivating. Daylight is the best.

Place the monitor in a way that no annoying reflections appear on the screen surface. To avoid reflections, the monitor should not be placed directly at the window. Basically, the viewing direction to the monitor should be parallel to the lighting from the ceiling and parallel to the window. Thus, daylight comes from the side to the desk.

Do not place the monitor directly under the ceiling lighting. Manual and writing tasks require more light than visual tasks at the computer. Consequently, reading and writing tasks are better placed on the desk near the window and the monitor may be located further in the room.

If you are right-handed, daylight from the left side avoids shadows of your hand when writing. The opposite applies to left-handed persons.
